Heat stress reduces daily weight gains.

Even at temperatures from 20°C, the calf’s water and electrolyte balance can become disrupted. What looks like “eating less” in the barn is measurable loss of performance.

What heat in the barn does to calves

Calves have only limited ability to dissipate heat. A sweaty coat,
lethargic animals and declining feed intake are typical warning signs.

Tips for hot days in the calf barn:

  • Place hutches with sufficient spacing between them in the shade
  • Ensure adequate air circulation (fans)
  • Avoid stressful situations (e.g., moving, dehorning
    or overcrowding)
  • Adjust feeding (use easily digestible carbohydrates
and increase milk volume and/or concentration)
  • Adjust feeding times (early morning or late evening)
  • Offer an additional electrolyte drink (e.g., BEWI®-SAN Bewilyt)

When the temperature rises,
the drink makes the difference.
