After birth, a piglet's enzyme activity is initially adapted to milk as a food source. Only with increasing age does the activity of enzymes that break down starch, fat, and protein increase. Therefore, the transition to cereal starch and plant protein should be gradual to avoid overwhelming the digestive system.
