Structure determines digestibility

Not all fats are the same. In modern pig feeding, it is not only the fat content that determines energy supply – but above all digestibility. Feeding trials show that fat powders with lecithin have significantly higher fat digestibility than conventional fat sources.

Why young pigs have limited fat digestion

In the first weeks of life, fat digestion in young pigs is not yet fully developed. The production of bile acids and pancreatic lipase is limited – meaning that fats can only be emulsified and broken down to a limited extent.

Especially after weaning – when piglets are switched from fat-rich sow’s milk to solid feed – a critical phase arises. The energy supply must be ensured even though digestive capacity is still limited. Here, the choice of fat source determines performance and profitability.

Why lecithin is important

Lecithin is a natural emulsifier that supports the breakdown of fats into tiny droplets. This process – emulsification – is the prerequisite for lipases to enzymatically split fats.

In young pigs with limited bile acid production, lecithin plays a crucial role: it compensates for the still inadequate endogenous emulsification and enables more efficient fat digestion.

Why fat powders offer advantages

Conventional fat sources – such as liquid oils or coarse fat flakes – offer only a limited surface area for enzymatic attack. Fat powders, by contrast, consist of fine particles with an enormous specific surface area.

This fine structure enables faster and more complete enzymatic breakdown. Lipases can act at more contact points simultaneously – digestibility increases measurably.

Why digestibility matters more than fat content alone

A high fat content alone does not guarantee a good energy supply. What matters is how much of the fat used is actually digested and utilized. Apparent fat digestibility – i.e., the proportion of fat that does not appear in the feces – is the relevant parameter.

In feeding trials, fat powders with lecithin achieve digestibility values of over 85% – significantly higher than many conventional fat sources. This means: More energy actually reaches the animal. Less is lost.

Why technical processability in feed is crucial

In addition to digestibility in the animal, processability in the feed mill plays a central role. Fat sources must be free-flowing, easy to dose and pelleting-stable – without impairing production efficiency.

Fat powders meet these requirements: they are free-flowing, low-dust and can be incorporated homogeneously into compound feed. Pelletability is maintained – even with higher fat levels in the formulation.
